June 04 2011 Newsletter

Greetings 2011 CSA Members,

Wednesday June 8 will be the first pick-up for the 2011 season. We have had a very cold and rainy Spring and the impact on the crops has been serious. We have weeds in abundance and flea beetles on plants that never, ever have flea beetles. We are attempting to keep up with the temperatures climbing into the nineties and sinking to 40 degrees within 24 hours. We are grateful that we can plant and plant again when the arugula looks terrible or the broccoli bolts due to great weather stress. The tornado, frost, and hail threats along with the insects reflect how much we are at the mercy of the elements.  On the other hand, we are grateful for the healthy birth of four baby goats to our dear Spritz and we are blessed to have returning to the farm this year the most devoted and wonderful crew on the planet. In addition, I am happy that the CSA model continues to grow throughout the country. We have a total of 500 members this year with 12 distribution sites. Brian and I thank you all for your support and faith in what we do.

** This year we will be launching a 4-week Bread Share. If after the 4 weeks we sense that it was a success, we will continue this new share. Chris Snye from The Placid Baker in Troy will create for us a special Denison Farm Bread. Here is his description:

Denison Farm Loaf (2lb8oz): A mix of all organic wheat and rye flours. Naturally leavened with our 8 year old sourdough starter. This makes for a very flavorful loaf of bread with a good shelf life to feed your family all week.

The cost for the 4 weeks is $25 and will run from June 15 – July 6. If you wish to purchase the bread share, please email me and send your check ASAP or by June 8th at the very latest. Please mail a check for $25 to our Schaghticoke address, made payable to Denison Farm. Once I receive your check, you will be signed up for the bread share.

** We also have beautiful organic cotton Denison Farm canvas market bags(designed by Larry Winchester, a Troy CSA member) for sale this year. For you CSA members, the cost is $12 and for non-members, the cost is $16. If you would like to purchase a bag, please email me to let me know and send a check by June 20th for a June 29th delivery. We will deliver them one time only to your pick-up site with your name pinned to the bag. After that one time delivery, you will be able to pick them up at either the Troy or Saratoga Farmers’ Market or at the farm (anytime!).

Each week throughout the season, I will email to you a newsletter with some tidbits about the farm, a list of what will be in your CSA box, and a recipe or two. Here are a few things to remember as the season begins:

Please visit Facebook and our website for updates (under Membership/Current Notices)
Please read the CSA handbook on our website.
Please come visit, but call in advance and come on any day but Sunday.
Please respect your host site and leave it clean and tidy each week.
Please respect the pick-up hours of 4:00-8:00 at most sites.
Please have a neighbor or friend pick up your share if you cannot.
Please be responsible for your payments/installments.
Please flatten the boxes and leave in a neat pile from week to week.
(A video is provided on our website to walk you through the process)
Please change your spam filters if necessary and check your spam/junk mail for CSA                newsletters and updates.
If you have any questions about your pick-up site, hours for pick-up, etc - now is the time to email me or call me (664-2510).
And finally, thank you for your very kind and inspiring emails and letters. Even though I have said this before, I mean this more than ever - Our partnership and the friendships formed are what nourish us and keep us motivated on the hottest of days with a multitude of bugs or on the coldest of evenings with our wet toes and a frost looming.

Here’s to a bountiful season ahead  – Justine and Brian
