Best thing about owning a share in Denison Farm: I
never was good at eating my vegetables—even as an adult. So
what did I do? I joined a CSA! Faced with all of the
wonderful produce consistently in my refrigerator, I began to find
ways to enjoy it. Then a really startling thing happened, I
started to become a pretty good cook! (Well, some think so!)
I love everything about our CSA. First of all, I love the
whole concept. One connects with and supports a local farmer,
gets a small taste of the farming process (with a working share),
then delights in and celebrates the harvest all season long.
The harvest… FRESH, organic veggies—the way good food is
supposed to taste!
Secondly, I have great respect for our farmer, Brian, and his wife, Justine. What a rare treat, in this day and age, to actually know and trust the people responsible for producing one’s food. I also enjoy connecting with other share members and farm workers either in the fields or at potluck gatherings. I always feel that being at the farm is a wonderful way to spend a morning. I love swapping condensed life stories or talking politics while digging up hidden potatoes or weeding the winter squash. This is my second season with the Denison Farm. One thing that has impressed me about Brian was the pride and special care he also takes in how his vegetables look. While gathering red onions, we were taught that in addition to brushing away the dirt, a little peeling of skin would reveal the beautiful violet color with some white contrast. Grouped together with the spiked green tops, the onions looked almost decorative.
The happy ending to my vegetable-eating story is that I am truly
enjoying them now. I can actually get excited about them,
“Oh look, we got rainbow chard this week!” I think my
favorite part about being a Denison Farm CSA member is when I can
respond to a compliment about a dish I've made by saying, “It’s
from our farm!”
